Atari Jaguar System - Video Game Console

The Atari Jaguar is a video game console, released by Atari Corporation in 1993. It was designed to surpass the Mega Drive/Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in processing power. It was in competition with 3DO and later consoles that made up the Fifth generation of video game consoles. The console was first released in selected U.S. cities in November 1993, and the rest of the country in early 1994. Although it was promoted as the first 64-bit gaming system, the Jaguar proved to be a commercial failure and prompted Atari to leave the home video game console market. Despite its commercial failure, the Jaguar has a large fan base that produces homebrew games, making the console a cult classic.

User Reviews about Atari Jaguar System - Video Game Console

The Atari Jaguar is a truly 64-bit system and Atari didn't lie about it all. Whatever "expert" the other reviewer says examined this system probably only glanced at one of the five processors it has. Two of these processors are 32-bit, while the two most important ones--the graphics and data processors--are 64-bit. It also has a (16-bit)Motorolla 68000 to serve secondary functions (like reading the joypad) but, sadly, some lazy developers just ported 16-bit games onto the Jaguar using this (Motorolla) chip, not even attempting to take advantage of the system's 64-bit power. Alien Vs. Predator looks like a movie and Doom was the most realistic version of this game in its time. (It was not "ruined." It lacked music to enhance the fright-factor.) The Sega 32X couldn't come close to the Jaguar: the 32X version of Doom isn't even full-screen, the system couldn't handle that and the image isn't nearly as good as the Jaguar's full-screen version. No serious expert in hardware could possibly confuse the powerful Jaguar with the weak 32X. If only all the Jaguar games took advantage of its hardware! If you're looking for the world's first 64-bit system, buy the Atari Jaguar! -- Atari DID NOT "fib"! This truly is a 64-bit system and its better games demonstrate its power!
This was a good game system but Atari fibbed to us. They said the
Jaguar was 64 bit. It was in fact only 32 bit. A man who works on game systems examined the Atari Jaguar. After taking it apart, he saw that the hardware in it was the same as Sega's 32X.
Some of the games look like they're only 16 bit. Pitfall The Mayan Adventure and Checkered Flag were two of them. People bragged about Tempest 2000 for the Jaguar but I saw nothing special about it.
Doom and Wolfenstein were two of the best Jaguar games. Sadly the Jaguar version of Doom has no music. But that didn't hurt it too much.
If you want a 64 bit game system, buy the N64. If you want a 32 bit game system, buy the Jaguar. I bought this game system at KB Toys really cheap.
Atari cheated their customers. Since Atari said that it's 64 bit, it should've been 64 bit. Not 32 bit. This system was worth what I paid for it but not full price. I give the Jaguar a 2 star rating. -- Atari fibbed
