The much-maligned Atari Jaguar, released in late 1993, was the most advanced video game system in the world at the time. It was the first 64-bit system (Nintendo 64 followed three years later). Yes, it was truly 64-bit, as the graphics and data processors were 64-bit, while it also contained two 32-bit processors (for other purposes) and a secondary processor, the Motorolla 68000, which was technically 16-bit but was never intended for use in primary functions. Sadly, a number of games were ports of 16-bit titles which lazy developers created due to their familiarity with the Motorolla chip. This gave fodder for critics to point to certain games and say, "hey, that looks 16-bit, so how can you call it a 64-bit system?" Well, this is poor logic, since the existence of lazy 16-bit ports has nothing to do with the hardware of the Jaguar. A 16-bit system cannot play a game like Alien Vs. Predator, which has movie-like graphics and amazing realism. It holds up even when compared to today's graphics. Other games that took advantage of the system's power were Tempest 2000, Doom, Iron Soldier, Ultra Vortek, Rayman and many others, including later releases, such as Skyhammer, Battlesphere, and Zero 5, all released well after the system was discontinued. That's right, this system had such devoted fans that they produced a market for games released three to ten years after the system was officially dropped! They're still making new games for it to this very day (see SONGBIRD PRODUCTIONS).

So if you're interested in the best the market had to offer in 1993, 1994 and 1995, the Atari Jaguar is what you're looking for. It's a great system, with many great games (and, of course, many weak ones) in any context. The saddest part is that people still make fun of this system when they don't know what they're talking about. This was the world's first 64-bit video game system. The Atari Jaguar system came out around 1993. The system was a nice size and had controllers that could adapt well to the varied play styles of its fair assortment of games, which did have sweet graphics. Many want to compare this system to the Nintendo 64 because it had 64-bit graphics as well. Of the two, the N64's graphics are much better, but many fail to see that the N64 came out 3 years later! In its time, the Jaguar had superior graphics, but in 3 years many new advancements in technology were made. So overall, if you like retro games or are a collector, this system is a great buy. We should rate a system by its graphics and fun compared to its competition at the time, not to the N64, for which the Jaguar was a worthy precursor. -- Advanced Graphics for its Time

Ah, the Atari jaguar...the system that never truly got the respect it deserved. it was ahead of its time in design and processing.

first off dont listen to the other review here its obvious he dosent know what hes talking about. im a gamer so i know what im saying here.

..the jaguar is a great system, with one fatal flaw some lackluster games, but there are a few that are decent, and worth checking out. the one that i bought when i got the system on clearence at key bee years ago..was ALIENS VS PREDATOR...awesome game in my opinion it should have been packed in with the jaguar ..

the jaguar came way before the Nintendo64 system..in fact it was the first 64 bit system out there. sure, some people like to rip and say its not..well technically speaking it is.

the graphics and sound were excellent, although the controller was a bit to be desired, it could be overlooked. personally, i never liked the idea of a keypad on a controller..it makes the controller a bit cumbersome.

the jaguar also had a great add on the jaguar cd which like the sega cd added extra power to the jaguar..the only decent cd game they made was blue lightning a jet fighter game that was originally an atari lynx game.

like most of atari's systems they always gave up too soon, and was doomed to poor marketing. i dont know why they did this? they had a great console here . the jaguar could have done much better, and because of this it was discontinued and heavily discounted..which turned out to be a good thing to gamers and collectors such as myself.

some of the best games for the jaguar are the following...Aliens vs predator, Wolfenstein 3d, blue lightning CD, kasumi ninja, and of course the original classic Doom.

the jaguar was always a love /hate situation with gamers even today..but, if you sit down and check it out you'll discover that the jaguar offers a little something for everyone. -- Atari Jaguar....Aliens vs Predator anybody?
